9th Dawn III

Price: $9.99

9th Dawn III is an open world RPG. It reminded me strongly of Diablo II online. You have a massive world to move around in and other players are there as well. The game also has some dungeon crawling elements, random enemy spawns, and plenty of gear and loot to collect. The game also lets you recruit monsters, go fishing, cook food, and other stuff to round out the experience. There is even a full card game within the game that you can play similar to Gwent in The Witcher or Triple Triad in Final Fantasy VIII. This is also one of the few games in its genre that has a single cost with no additional in-app purchases or subscriptions so get it while you can.

Arcane Showdown

Price: Free to play

Arcane Showdown is an online PvP game with card dueling and arena mechanics. Players build a deck, level up their troops, and do battle against other players. It supports both one versus one and two versus two game play along with a couple of different game modes. The mechanics are simple enough to learn but require a certain strategy to use at higher levels. It’s grind-heavy like most free to play games so prepare yourself for that. Otherwise, it’s a decent entrant into its genre.

BTS Universe Story

Price: Free to play

BTS Universe Story is a visual novel style game with adventure and gacha elements. There is a story in the game. However, the big draw here is the ability to create your own stories with the game’s story creation tool. You can play your own story or let other people play it. This gives the game exceptional replay value since you can essentially keep playing forever as long as players keep generating stories to play through. The mechanics won’t blow you away and the game play is simple. It’s still an excellent option in the visual novel space.

Final Order

Price: Free to play

Final Order is a strategy game with some kingdom building mechanics. You start the game by building a base, but you also get a monster to play with as well. It utilizes a traditional rock-paper-scissors style for the units, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You can also collect various monsters from all over the world and do battle with them as well. You don’t get to play as the monsters and that’s a little sad. Additionally, the strategy elements are nothing we haven’t seen before. It’s reasonably well put together, though, and should be fun for a while.

Genshin Impact

Price: Free to play

Genshin Impact is the surprise release of the last month. It’s an open world RPG and it’s drawn comparisons to games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You even get a glider to traverse long distances in less time. However, this one has gacha elements and it’s a free to play game instead of a premium game. You earn most characters through game play quests rather than through summon pulls like most gachas. The graphics and game play are actually pretty good and there’s a certain satisfying quality to the game itself. The monetization system takes some getting used to, but this is a surprisingly good game overall.

Illusion Connect

Price: Free to play

Illusion Connect is a strategy RPG title. It also has gacha elements as well as social game elements as well. The game boasts a cast of 50 characters. You get them, level them up, and actually spend time with them in the game to get to know them better. The social links give you additional benefits in the game. The combat is turn-based RPG style with some very light strategy elements. However, the big draw here is getting to know your characters, designing your little house, and the other stuff. It’s a decent mash-up of genres and even the micro-transactions aren’t that bad.

Infinity Mechs

Price: Free to play

Infinity Mechs is an idle game with mechs. It plays like most idle games. You set some mechs out to kill various bad guys. Over time you get enough resources to summon more mechs and level up the ones you have. Your mech combinations also matter as you get buffs depending on what you have. This one differs from most idle games by having a global leaderboard and a PvP element and a story mode as well. It’s reasonably deep and while it certainly doesn’t scale up forever, it’s definitely a good time killer for a while.

Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells

Price: Free to play

Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells is a match-three game by Zynga with a Harry Potter theme. It actually plays like most match-three games so you’re not getting anything new. The abilities you get are themed for Harry Potter and there is a small story for the players to follow. You can also unlock moments from the films to watch over again if you want to. The later stages get frustrating levels of difficult, but so do most games in the genre.

Masketeers: Idle Has Fallen

Price: Free to play

Masketeers: Idle Has Fallen is another idle game but this one is mixed with a gacha style mobile RPG. Players set their heroes out to battle enemies for various resources. There are various masks with various bonuses for your characters and an orb system to help move things along faster. You can absolutely just idle and tap your way through this, but a little thought actually speeds up the process quite a bit. Idle games have gotten a lot better in 2020 and this is a prime example of the genre evolving.

Sword Master Story

Price: Free to play

Sword Master Story is an idle game with RPG elements. You play your way through a story by completing various quests, but the game does most of the combat on your behalf except for the occasional special ability. There are also 40 heroes to collect, various loot and gear to find, and, of course, the aforementioned story. This is a good time killer, although RPG fans may find the game play a bit boring for their tastes. Also, the game is translated from Japanese and the translators could’ve done a better job. Those are about the only two bad things about it.
