Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition

Price: $17.99

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition is a mobile port of the original game. For those not in the know, Danganronpa is a visual novel with mystery, thriller, and horror elements. You play as a student at Hope’s Peak, a school for the smartest students. The goal is to murder a fellow student and get away with it without being caught. One student doesn’t want to play that game, though, and things spiral from there. This edition has mobile controls and a few little extras for the anniversary edition. It’s quite expensive and some people report a black screen issue. Make sure you test the game before the refund period to make sure you can get your money back if it doesn’t work for you.

Forza Street

Price: Free to play

Forza Street is Microsoft’s big game release for 2020 so far. It’s a mobile version of the popular racing game on Xbox. Unfortunately, the mobile game isn’t nearly as good as the console racer. The game revolves around a simplified control set of tapping at the right spots to properly time things like turns. You win the race if your timing is better than everyone else’s. Additionally, there are various cars to collect and customize. Here’s the thing, it’s actually not a bad game. However, because it carries the Forza name, a lot of folks went into it expecting something vastly different. It’s definitely not the Forza game we all wanted, but it’s not a bad time waster if you can get passed that.

Frontier Justice – Return to the Wild West

Price: Free to play

Frontier Justice – Return to the Wild West is a town building simulator with some extra mechanics. The main premise of the game is to build a town in the style of the Wild West, including things like saloons, stables, and other such things. Players can also perform mini-games like collecting bounties, raising horses, and gambling. There is a story, but it’s only just okay. Overall, it’s a fairly standard free to play town builder, but it’s still a decent time killer.

KartRider Rush+

Price: Free to play

KartRider Rush+ is the latest game from NEXON, developers of MapleStory M, AxE, and Darkness Rises. This one is a kart style racer similar to games like Beach Buggy Blitz or Mario Kart Tour. The game has a few different modes, including speed races, an arcade mode, a ranked mode, a time trial mode, and even a story mode. The game itself is a standard racing experience with heavier emphasis on things like drift turns to keep your pace along with a bunch of karts to collect. The game had a rough start on Google Play but it seems to have resolved most of the pressing bugs. It should compete well in the genre.

Legends of Runeterra

Price: Free to play

Legends of Runeterra is the latest mobile game from Riot Games and it’s one of the most anticipated mobile releases in 2020 so far. It’s a card dueling game similar to Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone. Players collect cards, build decks, and duel one another. Legends of Runeterra adds champion cards which function like commander cards in Magic’s commander game style. You build the deck around the champion. The game was highly received by basically everybody and it’s one of the best games of 2020 so far. Don’t be shocked if we include it on our end of the year best games list.

Levelhead

Price: $6.99

Levelhead is one of the truly great releases of 2020 so far. It’s a platformer with a level builder function similar to Mario Maker. You can even make a functioning calculator and all of that stuff. In any case, you play the role of a delivery person in training and you must get the robot to the end of the level to simulate totally realistic delivery conditions. The level builder is actually quite nice and you can share your levels with others (and download theirs). The game also has speed running features, a buttery smooth game play experience, an official Discord channel (and subreddit), and cross-platform cloud saves with the PC and Nintendo Switch versions. This is one of the truly excellent mobile game releases of the last couple of years.

Mass for the Dead

Price: Free to play

Mass for the Dead is a mobile game based on Overlord, a popular isekai anime. The game has a similar premise to the show. You’re stuck in an MMORPG after it shuts down to the public and now you must make the best of things. It features gacha RPG elements, an auto battle mode (and a 2x speed mode), an original story that revolves around the show, and plenty of cameo appearances from popular characters. Most of the game’s complaints stem from its stingy drop rates and over-priced in-game currency, but everything else about it seems to be good.

Mr Pumpkin 2: Walls of Kowloon

Price: $1.99

Mr. Pumpkin 2: Walls of Kowloon came out at the tail end of April and we wanted to cover it this month. This is a fictional puzzle game that takes place in Kowloon, a real place famous for its absurd population density. The game takes place 50 years in the past, but adds some cyberpunk elements along with some other fictional touches to add some flair to the game. You basically explore the city and get to know its crazy inhabitants. The game is cheap with no in-app purchases or ads and it’s actually a decent overall experience.

SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off

Price: Free to play

SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off is a cooking game. It actually plays like a lot of other cooking games. You get patrons who come in and order food. You cook and serve the food as fast as possible. It features a bunch of cameos from SpongeBob, a kid-friendly atmosphere, and various boosters to help get through levels. It’s fun to play for a while. However, the free to play elements do start to creep in after several hours of game play. If you do let your kids play this, make sure to lock your Play Store account behind a password so they can’t spend money.

Tropico Blast

Price: Free to play

Tropico Blast is a new match-three style game. It plays like most other match-three games except this one only requires you to match two shapes together to start a combo. The game gets more challenging as you play just like most games in the genre. Additionally, it includes some randomly generated levels along with support for seven languages. It had some early issues but the developers seem to have cleaned up the game nicely. It’s a good little time waster.
